All you need to know about breastfeeding and breast implants!

As the number of women who have breast implants goes up, the number of women that are asking if they can still breast feed with implants has also gone up! The internet can be very confusing sometimes, you can come across a number of different answers for just one search. In a nutshell the answer is yes, you can still breast feed even if you have breast implants, most ladies can, the same as ladies that do not have implants; however, it may be a bit more difficult if:

  • Your implants were placed through an areolar incision producing some scarring of the milk ducts. It is rare, but could happen. You had any other breast surgery (breast lift, breast reduction) in the past.

  • You need to be aware that if you get mastitis while breast feeding (infection around the nipple that travels to the breast ducts) and it is not treated with antibiotics. the infection can travel through the milk ducts to the capsule around the implant and increase the risk of capsular contracture around the implant (hardening of the implant).

We recommend you discuss breast implants and breast feeding with your surgeon before you decide to undergo breast augmentation.
